Gilbert and Sullivan refers to the Victorian-era theatrical partnership of the dramatist W. S. Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan and to the works they jointly created. The two men collaborated on fourteen comic operas between and , of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known. Gilbert, who wrote the libretti for these operas, created .   As I have mentioned before, I really like Gilbert and Sullivan’s last operetta The Grand Duke. Historically, this is the operetta most G&S enthusiasts like least. And, I suppose, they have a few points in their favor, as in the sometimes very bad rhyming on Gilbert’s part.

The operetta features the composers’ trademark wordplay and humor. Starring in the title roles are two BU alums: Sara Heaton (CFA’07) as Patience and Aaron Engebreth (CFA’99) as Reginald Bunthorne. Engebreth, a lifelong Gilbert and Sullivan fan, says he is elated to be appearing in .
